Game Preview: San Antonio Spurs Vs Memphis Grizzlies

Well, it finally happened. The jig is up, the news is out, and Spurs have finally used part of their pool of assets to acquire a running partner for Victor Wembanyama in the form of a fleet -footed de’aaron Fox.

Whether the spurs have their shiny new toys ready to go after this is still a fair question. Spurs fans may have to wait another game to see the combination of their stars in action. Meanwhile, they seem to take down a beaten Memphis team in one of their rare moments of weakness this season.

Despite the evil of their recent injuries, the grizzlies have not left their defensive identity (7.) and can still put the ball in the hole in bundles (5th in offensive rating, 1. In the scoring). Even with the players sidelines, they continue to play with the kind of physical, aggressive style that has become their trademark. Jaren Jackson Jr., when available, is still one of the league’s leading edge protectors and stands as one of the few natural foils for the violent extraordinary in Wembanyama.

In order for the spurs to take advantage of this opportunity, they have to avoid the trap of playing down to their wounded competition, something young teams are especially susceptible to. Victor Wembanyama’s presence would give San Antonio a crucial advantage in front track if Jackson Jr. is not in the lineup (although he appears to be available for the competition), but as the recent games have shown, individual brilliance does not always translate into team success.

The last time these teams met, Grizzlies demonstrated why they remain a strength to be counted on at the Western Conference. When Healthy Marcus Smart and Jaren Jackson Jr. Anchor one of the league’s most disturbing defensive devices, while the development of players such as Vince Williams Jr. has given Memphis even more defensive versatility.

The most important matchup can actually be on the guard positions, where both teams can rely strongly on players who started the season with supporting roles. Spurs’ backcourt rotation has shown signs of finding his foothold in recent games, but the consistency is still evasive outside Chris Paul, especially in late play situations. And of course, nobody tells which players Spurs bench will roll out tonight in the wake of a trade that sent three Jones, Zach Collins and Sidy Cissoko.

Never fear, a high octane reinforcement is on the way! With good luck we can all see him later this evening.
