Saranac Lake’s Ice Palace continues 125-year-old tradition by Winter Carnival (photos)

Since Buffalo Bert has predicted six weeks more in the winter, Upstate New York might as well have fun with it. The annual Saranac Lake Winter Carnival is working on its mid-winter festivals.

The event runs throughout the Adirondack city from now to 9 February with a full event calendar, including an ice cream palace, gala parade, snowshoeing, inner pipe races, hobby horse and more.

Every year a theme has a theme, and this year organizers have chosen “music legends.” Around and inside the popular Ice Palace, visitors find tribute to all kinds of bands and music icons. And you can even see some frozen fish along the walls.

Opening ceremony Fireworks took place on February 3 on one of the coldest nights of the year. Participants reported that the temperature dropped to 16 degrees below zero when the final was complete.

You have another chance to see fireworks in Saranac Lake at Grand “Storming the Palace” Fireworks at. 19.30 on February 8th.

ICE PALACE is built on Lake Flower’s Pontiac Bay since 1898 and uses between 1,000 to 4,000 ice blocks, depending on the size of the structure.

Saranac Lake Winter Carnival originally started as a day’s fancy dress party in 1897 to break Winter’s chill and to promote outdoor sports and games.

One of the longest traditions of the festival is the carnival button, collected by both residents and visitors. “Doonesbury” creator and Saranac Lake -Neat Garry Trudeau began designing the buttons in 1981.
