King Sooper’s responding after 10,000 Colorado grocery workers plan to start beating Thursday Thursday

Denver (KKTV) -approximately 10,000 Colorado grocery workers in 77 King SOOPERS stores begins a two -week strike at. 5 Thursday.

All Unionized King Soopers stores throughout Adams, Arapahoe, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas and Jefferson counties and King Soopers stores in Boulder and Louisville will participate in Strike, UCFW Local 7 said.

These workers voted with 96% to approve an unreasonable work practice (ULP) strike during the last week of January, according to Local 7.

According to the Union, their contracts expired in January and they have been in contract negotiations since October.

On Monday, a spokesman for King Soopers said they offered several wage proposals to his employees, but the union reportedly never responded to its own salary proposal. King Soopers said the union reportedly refused to let its members vote on competitive wages, significant payroll investments or long -term investments.

“We urge Local 7 to rethink their approach and prioritize the best interests for our employees, their members and the communities they serve,” said a spokesman for King Soopers. “It’s time to put aside their unreasonable demands, false rhetoric and headline seeking tactics and working towards a fair and timely decision that increases associate wages while holding groceries affordable,” said Joe Kelley, President of King SOOPERS. “We want to make a fair investment in our union staff, and this workstop only delays further to add more money to their paychecks.”

On Friday, after the strike permitted permission, King Sooper’s Leadership said in a statement that the National Labor Relations Board “has not decided that King Soopers has committed an unreasonable work practice during these negotiations.”

“While we respect the rights of our employees to participate in a workstop, any associate who chooses to continue to work is welcome,” said King Soopers President Joe Kelley. “We believe that our employees would be better served if the union worked with us to reach an agreement that would not risk leaving our employees without a paycheck. We remain open to continue to meet with the Union to reach a decision. ”

UCFW Local 7 requirements that employers questioned members about negotiations and monitoring them during their discussions with union staff, sent members home from work and threatened them with discipline to carry union equipment, refuse to provide necessary information for contract negotiations and insist on Turn off $ 8 million in court’s health benefits funds to pay for wage increases for active workers.

The declaration from King Sooper also said that management in the grocery chain believes that strike remedies were “premature” and said employees had not been allowed to vote on the company’s Last, best and last offer. This statement added that the King Soopers stores are expected to remain open through the strike.
