According to Holker, the boss experienced “trauma and abandonment” in his childhood and speculated that the couple’s presence on social media “probably became a stressor” before the boss died of suicide at the age of 40 in December 2022. In the months that led to his death, Holker claimed that boss had more opportunities to “stab around” in the “dark corners of his mind” without “structure and rhythm” that was provided by his job at Ellen DeGeneres showwhich ended in May 2022. Holker also admitted that she “may have overlooked” some signs pointing to Boss’ struggle that remembered his “irritability, insomnia, weight loss, a lack of energy, an uninteresting in work and friends and fun ”and changes with his personal hygiene. “Stephen always looked like the protector of me and the kids – our superman – and in the wake of his death I feel a duty to be his,” Holker wrote.
