Quentin Grimes-Caleb Martin Trade Characters: Mavericks continue to act; Sixers are getting younger

The athletic has live cover of 2025 NBA Trade Deadline.

Dallas Maverick’s shocked the world this past weekend when they traded Luka Dončić for Los Angeles Lakers, but they haven’t finished shopping. It seems that the MAVs are aiming for some help after the season on the wing as they have agreed to an agreement with the Philadelphia 76ers to bring Caleb Martin to Dallas.

Mavs sends Quentin Grimes and 2025 Sixers second round pick back to Philadelphia in exchange for Martin. ESPN first reported the deal.

Any feature of Mavs will be under a lighter light and stronger microscope these days after Anthony Davis acquisition. So let’s look up the brightness and bust the red pen so we can beat grades on this trade.

Mavericks acquires Caleb Martin

Dallas GM Nico Harrison has mentioned the Davis acquisition as a win-now step for Mavs, which is interesting considering they did the NBA final last year. Acquiring Martin to shout some of this autumn experience on the wings, after Dončić is gone, would make sense.

Most of Martin’s good playoff experience happened in a postal season when he sometimes became Ray Allen with his exterior shooting during the Miami Heat’s race for the NBA final in 2023. Throughout the entire mail season, Martin was on average more than 12 points per. Battle, made better than 52 percent of his shot and shot 42.3 percent from deep. He shot well again last post season, but without Jimmy Butler available, the heat lost to Boston Celtics in the first round. Still, Martin was praised well.

I think Grimes has a higher ceiling than Martin, but Mavs goes with more of a safe thing here. With a shortened window to potentially conflicting, the movements make sense. Martin can defend himself well on the perimeter and even compete with a certain power forward in small ball situations. He is a good defender at Ball, and it will be even more true with guys like Daniel Gafford, the wounded Dereck Lively II and Davis behind him.

Martin earns 37.9 percent of his 3-Pointers this season and he is good at making the extra passport or kicking out for a shooting game when he attacks a hard closeout. He is a smart veteran who has really found his way since leaving Charlotte Hornets. He will be able to start for Mavs, or he may be super valuable coming out of the bench. Martin is also on a lovely contract for Mavs, earning less than $ 9 million annually through 2027. He has a player setting for $ 9.3 million in 2027-28.

Sixers acquire Quentin Grimes, 2025 Second Round Election

I love this trade for Sixers. I am a big grime guy and have wondered why he jumped around so much in his young career. The 24-year-old wing now goes to his fourth team for four seasons. Given the Sixers’ injury problems, their campaign is largely a lost case. I know they are within whispers distance of the play-in tournament in the eastern conference, and the hope is that if they get into healthy after the season, they can shock the world. Maybe it’s possible? I just don’t know what about this season or their recent story makes you feel sure they will find health in April.

Instead of just standing Pat, Sixers got a younger wing with higher upside. Grimes is a very solid 3-and-D option. He is a better shooting game than Martin, both for this season and his career. He earns 37.6 percent of his 3-Pointers for his career and he has made 39.8 percent this season. Grimes can handle the ball a bit to attack against a rotating defense and he is a good enough playmaker to find a teammate in these scramble moments. He also scores on the best clip in his career and he still has room to grow.

I love the idea of Grimes next to Tyrese Maxey and Paul George on the perimeter. It would look for Sixers to work him into the starting lineup early, so he is up to speed if the Sixers is ever healthy enough to make some noise. He goes into the summer as a limited free agent, so they have control over his future if they want it. It is possible that they upgraded the rest of the season while also getting younger on the position.
