Mavs GM Nico Harrison is right back on it with another confusing step to the point where he might just be addicted to make horrible trades

Look, I don’t want this to seem like I’m hoping for Mavs fans. Since I have been blogging the last few days as all this has been going on, at the end of the day I really feel for that fanbase. What happens to them is arguably the biggest fear of a sports fan. It’s sports hell. To get your franchisee torn away from you like that, by reading all the details of the move, making things feel even worse with each update, which helps lacquers from all teams, it’s all a nightmare.

If all the Luka things weren’t already enough for them to tackle, what if I told you that the man who was responsible for this whole diaster decided to continue and add even more fuel to the fire? It seems impossible, right?

Wrong

For those who may not be aware of these players, Nico Harrison basically traded the better, younger player beyond a 2nd round choice… .for Caleb Martin. No matter how you slice it, this doesn’t really feel like maximizing your asset. Not only is grimes a better player, he has the better season! Giving it up and a draft of asset when you didn’t even get more than 1 draft choices from Lakers make you question what the hell is going on?

And before Mavs -fans freak out on me, the reason something like this happened is pretty simple. Look as always on the money

A step like this tells me that Nico Harrison and Mavs did not think they would be able to come to an agreement with Grimes on a new potential expansion. Maybe Grimes are looking for 10-15m+, and Mavs doesn’t think that’s what he’s worth it. By not signing an expansion, Grimes becomes an RFA, which means he is hitting the market, but Mavs has the opportunity to match the offer he gets. All it takes is a team to get stupid in RFA and offer something crazy, and if the stomachs reject it, they lose this asset for nothing.

This is not new, it happens all the time. The confusing thing for me, though, is the time of it all. Why? Because Mavs Just went through this When they added Grant Williams! Brad Stevens and Celtics would not expand Grant, who put him in RFA. What happened?

A sign and trade during the summer. There is no urgency doing something like this right now! Even if you do not want to pay Grimes, you can still perform a sign and act later this season when maybe the picture is a little clearer of what the landscape looks like. Maybe in this scenario you are able to get a pick -back or something if the new team really wants the player. The point is that trade in a worse player than you have now, while also giving up a choice, seems like bad business, but what else is new? I get out of the fact that they just acted for Max Christie, and maybe Nico Grimes thought was superfluous or something because he is a “guard” while Martin is more of a “wing” but again is grimes the better player who after My opinion is the better circumference defender who is more a need at Mavs at the moment.

Given everything that just happened to Luka, I can’t imagine that Mavs fans are excited that all this seems to have been done as a way to get ahead of the expansion/RFA negotiations and save some money on. Again I feel for them because they are in absolutely sports hell right now

When you look at Mavs -current watch list if you were sold on the idea of shopping Grimes, why not act for another primary ball trader/shot? Currently, all Mavs are really Kyrie, which is a dangerous game to play. The creation of this watch list got a big hit and you just gave one of your better young prospects (and a choice) to a player who is not so good and do not do any of the things you now need from a Creation point of view? It feels… .odd.

With a few days to go until the trade deadline, there may be more movements that we just have to wait and see that it will help make a step like this to make a little more sense. I have no idea what it could be, but it has to come right? Will Nico be forced into these decisions of ownership? Was there a kind of mandate to reduce wages, and this really isn’t his fault, or does he think he crushed these two latest trades?

It all makes less and less sense, and you can understand why Mavs fans are rightly bullshit.
