Cosgrove joins Deadline Day

Stockport County is pleased to confirm the addition of Barnsley striker Sam Cosgrove, who joins us on loans for the rest of the season.

The 28-year-old, a league winner with Plymouth Argyle in 2023, ends up strengthening Dave Challinor’s attacking opportunities when we seem to secure a place in League One-Play-Off sites in the second half of the season.

Cosgrove began his career as a schoolboy in Everton before moving on to Wigan Athletic at the age of 16. During his time with the latiks, the Sam cut his teeth in non-league under loan forms with Barrow, Chorley, Nantwich Town and North Ferriby.

After a short spell at Carlisle United, the striker moved north of the border to Aberdeen and joined the Scottish Premiership Club for a non -public charge.

Sam undoubtedly enjoyed the best spell in his career so far while he was with Dons, scoring 21 times in all competitions during the 2018/19 season, with his 17 league goals the year that was improved only by Rangers’ Alfred Morelos.

He followed up with 23 the following season, six of which came in the Europa League before the campaign was shortened due to Covid Pandemic. However, this form eventually gave him a step to the championship and joined Birmingham City for a non -published fee in January 2021.

While he was limited to only 17 appearances in his time at St. Andrews, enjoyed Sam successful loan forms in League One with AFC Wimbledon and Plymouth Argyle, scoring 12 times for the latter when Argyle got the league a title under Steven Schumacher.

A permanent relocation to Barnsley then followed, with the 6’4 tip, scoring six times last season and three came on both legs of Tykes’ League One Play-off semi-final against Bolton Wanderers.

Forward will not be available for Saturday’s match against his parent club, but is training with Dave Challinor’s side for the first time on Tuesday ahead of a potential debut away at Bristol Rovers next week. He becomes our second signature of Deadline Day after the addition of Norwich defender Brad Hills on loan.

Director of Football, Simon Wilson said:

“Sam brings us a brilliant profile to complement our current strikers, as someone who has a physical presence but who also has smart movement and creates dangerous races. He is used to being at the end of seasonal games with meaning, and it will also help as we continue to push for a strong finish. We believe that Sam fits well with our group and is ready to influence immediately. “

First-Team Manager, Dave Challinor said:

“I am very happy to add Sam’s experience to our group. We have tried to get a target attack that can connect with and ease the stress of woots and Tanto at the top end, and to be able to get a player who knows the league has been successful across his career and is the profile we lead After is great for us.

“We feel we can provide the service to create opportunities for SAM to show what he can do from a goal scoring perspective, and he is really motivated to show what he can do.”
