Ice Storm Warning and Winter Weather Advisory Issued for Wednesday Night to Thursday Morning

Tuesday afternoon of February 4, 2025

The expected gossip and freezing rain on the road is safer with the alarms now issued by the National Weather Service. An ice storm warning is for the high mountains where heavier glaze will occur. A winter weather counseling is for large parts of the rest of our region, including cities along the I-95, plus Central Virginia north into central Pennsylvania.

The timing remains focused after dark on Wednesday night through commuting on Thursday morning.

How much ice cream with combined gossip and freezing rain is subjectively based on which model gets more credibility. In this case, the American models GFS and NAM still produce 3 km the highest amounts. The European ECMWF is lower and more in line now with National Weather Service forecast.

Below are the comparison of ICE forecasts from these computer models and National Weather Service forecasting offices.

We do not measure ice as lightly as we would snow depth. The real question will be how much ice cream can accrue wood and power lines to cause a problem.

As for the total, there may be areas over 1/4 inches, which can break some branches and lead to some power cuts. Two things to keep in mind with an ice cream storm:

1. Once we get into a cold air dam, it is very difficult for models to predict when it lifts and thaw.
2. Even when temperatures rise above 32F, it takes time for the ice to thaw, so it doesn’t end quickly.

Frankly this can be confusing. There will be more ice that can weigh heavier and take longer to melt further west and north.

Winter precipitation

The winter blend of gossip or freezing rain depends on the thickness of hot air in the middle of the atmosphere. An inversion is a layer of hot air squeezed between colder clouds and colder soil. Snow can form in the clouds, then fall and melt and then have a chance to freeze again on the way down.

Sleet = Melted snow, then fucked to the ice pellets on the way down.

Freezing rain = Melted snow cannot abstain in time, but it will be in contact with the ground. It falls like rain, then ices on the surface of everything it touches.

This is the colder solution, it has a more widespread and heavier influence.

This solution has less total ice cream, but still enough to be effective. It also does not show significant sludge, so I think it may be missing some of the big flour elements.

Take away

• Plan for ICE to build Wednesday night. Especially midnight until morning.
• On Thursday morning, the thaw gradually from south to north.
• Even if Temp’s heat, ice cream building will take time to melt.
• This must be done before noon.

Last thoughts:

• A glaze of ice = travel problems.
• 0.10 ”ice = moderate glaze, and some branches may fall
• 0.25 “to 0.50″+ ice = trees and power lines begin to have more breaks. This would be a widespread disturbance.
• Thicker ice cream also means a longer time to thaw. So temps could heat, but a few extra hours would be needed to melt to allow for safe travel.
• In short, this is the worst weather to travel in, you can’t play in it, and there’s a great chance of school influences on Thursday.

Restoring my message about dyslexia

I am aware that there are some spelling and grammar letters and occasional other errors. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer errors I might miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out in my second year at Cornell University. That did not prevent me from getting my meteorological degree and being the first to get AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region. One of my professors told me that I had reached it so far without knowing and not letting it be a crutch in the future. It was Mark Wysocki and he was totally correct! I miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The auto -corrective spell check on my computer sometimes makes an injustice to make it worse. I can also make a mistake in the forecast.
