Ice storm warnings such as snow and freezing rain are targeted at the North-East US

Freezing of rain is a relatively rare form of rainfall. It occurs when liquid water – or rain – falls through a layer below -nul air close to the soil surface.

Under certain circumstances, instead of freezing to ice, it can remain like liquid water, but super -cooled with a temperature during freezing.

When the super -cooled water hits the soil – or any other cold surface – it freezes by influence and can immediately transform roads and sidewalks into ice rinks.

This type of rainfall is also likely to freeze on top of cars and even stick to power cables, leading to a risk of widespread travel disorder and power cuts.
