Snow, gossip, ice cream and rain creates messy commuting – NBC New York

A winter weather advice is set to take effect Wednesday night prior to snow, gossip, ice cream and finally rain, which causes Thursday morning to commute to a mess.

The advice is for the entire Tri-State area, except for eastern Suffolk County on Long Island and immediately along the coast of Jersey Shore.

The system arrives at the Metro area of New York City in the pre-daggry hours on Thursday. At the beginning, rainfall will be completely snow. It will not be heavy snow, but it is still enough to reduce visibility and create some smooth conditions for people who hit roads. Take it easy and give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination, especially if you are traveling on untreated roads.

As the morning continues, warmer air changes into the region and rainfall changes from snow to gossip, freezing rain and rain, though the exact type of rainfall will vary based on timing and location.

For South Jersey, mix a short period of gossip and freezing rain with the snow before switching to all rain at sunrise. If you are out on the roads early, you primarily have the thin dusting of snow to fight with. But if your commuting puts you on the roads closer to the rush of rush, the relatively warmer temperatures associated with the rain will result in a good amount of slush on roads.

In North and Central Jersey, there is a better chance of seeing some light glaze in peak times, especially on untreated sidewalks, bridges and roads. This comes on top of the initial snowfall before dawn.

Like South Jersey, NYC and Long Island have a short transition to gossip before switching to all rain. However, timing is a little later because the warmer air moves into the region from the south, which means the city will stick to the freezing temperatures a little longer, giving snow short the opportunity to accumulate, especially longer west.

At the late morning commuting it is pretty much all rain – which in turn will result in more slush than snow when the system moves out.

The glaze amounts are not disastrous; In places where ice is accumulated, it adds up to less than a tenth of an inch area where most people get no more than a thin glaze.

But even a light amount of ice can make the journey particularly problematic. If a surface looks wet, there is a good chance that it is actually ice cream.

Hudson Valley will see majority snow through Thursday morning. Short pockets of gossip and freezing rain are possible as the system begins to end late in the morning, but there will be little to no lap.

When everything is said and done, about 1 to 2 inches adds over large parts of New Jersey and into the Hudson Valley. Even parts of NYC and Western Long Island could pick up cessation close to an inch. Slightly higher totals in the 2-3 inches will be limited to the higher heights.

Although we do not expect any monster -s or ice pots anywhere from this system, it is the time of what will make it so effective.

For those who can work from home, it will be a great day to do it. For the children, you are unlikely to have a snow day, but a delayed opening is very possible.

At tonight’s commuting, showers will be long away, and much of the AM -SNE has started to melt.

This will be a much quieter commuting compared to the morning drive, but still expect some smooth or icy spots on the roads, especially with some of the snowmelt pleasures as Temps further north and west dip back during freezing. Become aware of your surroundings if you need to be out.

In addition to Thursday, we get a quick breath last Friday before our next slurd winter system moves through this weekend. It will be followed closely by another rain/snow/ice chance early the following week. We are busy and messy week and a half week ahead of us; Thursday is just the start of it.
