A young Wisconsin man died of an asthma attack after the price of his inhaler Skyrocket nearly $ 500, according to a trial filed by his family.

Cole Schmidtknecht, 22, suffered from asthma, a chronic illness he treated with an Advair Discus Ininhalator that allegedly cost him no more than $ 66.

These costs changed last year, when Optumrx, a subsidiary of the United Health Group, stopped coverage of the inhaler Schidtknecht, which was used for a decade, claims the trial.

On January 10, 2024, Schmidtknecht went to his local Optum RX-Walgreens pharmacy in Appleton, Wisconsin, and expected to fill his usual prescription when he was advised by Walgreens that his medicine was no longer covered by his insurance and would cost him $ 539.19 out of pocket, according to the trial.

“Defendant Optum RX had a duty not artificially inflating prescription drug prices for medicine such as Advair Discus for insured patients, including Cole Schmidtknecht, which made them so unaffordable that patients could not get the medications prescribed by their doctors,” the trial said.

In a statement to ABC News, Optum RX said Schmidtknecht filled a generic albuterol prescription, an inhaler used to stop asthma attacks, January 10, 2024, with a $ 5 copay, adding that the same drug previously Was filled in October 2023 by him.

The reception service said it “also has available clinically appropriate options and form information” when medicine is not covered by a provider.

In the trial, Schmidtknecht’s family “Walgreens -defendant failed to show reasonable care, knowing or should have known the unreasonable risk of injury to asthmatic patients, including Cole Schmidtknecht, it would be the result of not giving him advice discus or a Medical equivalent alternative medicine for an affordable price to the point of view.

Walgreens refused to comment on the trial when ABC News reached a comment.

Just a few months after Schmidtknecht’s death, Makers of Advair, GSK, announced in March 2024 that starting January 2025, most will pay out of their pocket for their inhaler, is $ 35 a month.

“The three largest producers of inhalers in the world have all committed to hooding the cost of inhalers in the United States at a maximum of $ 35 at the pharmacy counter,” he said.

Dr. Jade Cobern, MD, MPH, who is a board certified in pediatrics and general preventative medicine, recommended people who suddenly see an increase in medicine costs or no longer can afford the pocket costs of using an app like Goodrx or reaching out to the manufacturer to that Get help or possible discounts.

“If you are struggling to breathe, it is imperative that you immediately seek medical help through your doctor, by going to the emergency room or by calling 911,” Cobert said.
