Wake Forest ends strongly for victory in Stanford

Cameron Hilderth broke a late draw with two free kicks, Hunter Sallis added a few 21 seconds later, and Wake Forest finished a season series fej of host Stanford with a 79-73 triumph Wednesday.

Hilderth led all scorers with 21 points and Sallis added 19 to Demon Deacons (17-6, 9-3 Atlantic Coast Conference), who beat Stanford 80-67 in Winston-Salem, NC, last month.

Maxime Raynaud gathered 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for cardinal (15-8, 7-5) who lost their other equal.

In a close-related game where no team led by double, Stanford went up 65-62 with six minutes left before they were outscored 17-8 the rest of the way.

A layup of Stanford’s Chisom Okpara with 1:42 to go produced the game’s last draw, but Hilderth made a mistake on Wake Forest’s next possession and gave the visitors the lead with 1:20 to go by sinking his two bad shots.

Anthony Batson Jr. Sallis then doubled the margin with his free kick.

After Oziyah sellers and Raynaud both failed on 3-point shots, Wake Forest’s Ty-Laur Johnson fell into a pair of 43 seconds left. Demon Deacons were able to throw home when Stanford missed eight of his last 10 shots while mixing four revenue.

Sallis went 7-for-9 on the line and Hildreth 6-for-8 for Demon Deacons, who made 25 of their 33 free throw, who scored the hosts 25-19 on Stripe.

Sallis also found time for a team high seven rebounds and a team high five assists.

Tre’von Players added 12 points for Wake Forest, who won another straight game after back-to-back defeat.

Raynaud recorded his leadership 19th double-double in the season despite shooting only 4-for-11 overall and 1-for-7 from 3-point reach. He also had a Holdhøj six assists and three steals.

Okpara tiled in with 14 points, Ryan Agarwal 12 and Sellers 10 for Stanford, who lost at home for the first time in ACC Play.
