Athens to test county tornado-sirenbor on Wednesday

Athens-Clarke County and the University of Georgia will conduct annual outdoor tornado warning sirens at 1 p.m. 9 Wednesday.

The tests are part of the state serious weather readiness.

“Serious weather conditions for weather are possible in Athens-Clarke County at any time of the year,” said Athens-Clarke County Fire Chief Nate Moss. “Some of these dangers could include ice storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and other types of serious weather events. The 12 Tornado -Sirens are located in Sandy Creek Park, Holland Youth Sports Complex, Bishop Park, West Broad Street by Old Epps Bridge Road, College Avenue Parking Deck, Uga Chemistry Building, Uga University Village Community, Hilsman Middle School, The City of Winterville, Southeast Clarke Park, Uga State Botanical Garden and Uga East Campus Parking Deck.

The sirens are designed to warn residents who are outside to seek immediate shelter when a tornado warning is emitted by the National Weather Service.

Tornado-sirens are only activated in the event of a Tornado warning or a test and are not activated to other serious warnings or non-weather nuts situations.

To join a drill suggests the government:
