Reddit has temporarily banned one of its communities – and removed another – after X owner Elon Musk claimed that comments from the site’s users about his employees broke the law.

R/Whitepeopletwitter SUDPTDIT, who typically invites people to share fun positions from X, have been banned for 72 hours after some users have sent comments calling for violence against members of the musk -led Department of Government Efficiency (Doge).

They responded to reports that suggested some DOGE -staff have gained access to sensitive personal information of millions of Americans.

Musk – who often champions his commitment to freedom of speech – shared a post about X containing the comments and said, “They have broken the law”.

Subbreddit was banned shortly after.

Reddit refused to comment, but led the BBC to a public speech it had made after the ban.

“Over the past few days, we have seen an increase in content in several communities that violate the Reddit rules,” the post reads.

“Debate and dissent are welcome to Reddit – threats and doxing are not.”

Musk has previously criticized litigation against people for coming up with comments online.

In 2024 he responded to a video of someone who is alleged to be arrested for offensive comments online by asking “Is this Britain or the Soviet Union?”.

Imran Ahmed, head of the center to counteract Digital Had (CCDH) said there was “rich irony” in Musk’s comments.

“It’s always a rule for Elon, another rule for everyone else,” he said.

“Oh, he is about freedom in order – the freedom to do what he wants, regardless of costs for people, their families and basic elements of democracy.”

Musk sued CCDH in 2023 over claims that it took “illegal” steps to access data from X after claiming hate numbers had risen on the platform.

An American judge rejected the case in 2024.

Tensions grow

Tensions have escalated between billionaire and reddit users in recent weeks, after More than 100 subbreddits banned users from sending links to x In protest of Musk’s controversial arm movement at a rally celebrating Donald Trump’s return to the office.

The billionaire spread twice the arm straight out as he thanked the crowd for “getting it”.

The moderators of R/Whitepeopletwitter -Subreddit removed many of the insulting comments after they were published, but this was not enough to prevent a temporary ban.

Any attempt to access subbreddit now shows a message that reads that it has been “temporarily prohibited due to a spread of violent content”.

“Encouraging and glorifying violence or doxing is against Reddit’s platform -covering rules,” it states that the addition of subbreddit will open again in 72 hours.

Reddit has also taken steps to issue a subbreddit titled R/Iselondeahyet – where a user who was released almost daily that Musk had not died – with a permanent ban.

Prohibition and threats

The stills came in response to movements allegedly made by DOGE – which is not a government department, but a team within the administration.

The team has got the job with Reducing radically regulation and federal government expenses.

US media has reported that the Trump administration gave Musk’s deputies access to the federal payment system that controls the flow of trillions of dollars in public funds every year.

It has led to setback online with people who criticized the decision and the names of the Doge staff involved were shared publicly.

But the decision to remove subbreddit may have been about more than Reddit enforcement of its policies.

On Monday, a prosecutor was appointed by Trump said the FBI investigated “targeted” for DOGE staff.

“Our first review of the evidence presented to us indicates that certain individuals and/or groups have committed actions that appear to violate the law in targeting DODE employees,” said US District of Columbia Edward lawyer Martin.

In a letter to musk he sent to X, Mr Martin said he “would not tolerate threats to dove workers or offense of the dissatisfied”.

“Any threats, confrontations or other actions in any way affecting their work can break several laws,” he wrote.

“We will pursue anyone and all the trial against anyone who hinders your work or threatens your people.”
