Cliff Mass warns two centimeters possible overnight

The general Seattle area is not done with snow and cold weather. The region will experience “serious” snow on Wednesday. But there is still nothing compared to what models suggest that is coming.

The University of Washington Atmospheric Sciences Professor Cliff Mass warns that we should be prepared for a tough Thursday morning commuting.

“This afternoon we had a weak band that went through and produced slightly light things and mixed rain. But tonight is more serious, “Mass explained to” The Jason Rantz Show “at KTTH. “There is a cold, unstable air that it will move through, and the model suggests that we could get another one for two inches or so. Tomorrow morning it can be a repetition of this morning. Maybe even heavier in some places. “

While Mass said there is some uncertainty with parts of the region, “It seems that there will be snow showers that will accumulate a little during the night.”

Cliff Mass says ‘serious’ snow will hit the Seattle area

Cliff Mass said to expect the snow and the cold weather to play a role in Thursday’s commuting. He calls the snow “serious” because “even the empty this morning (Wednesday) caused a lot of cancellations.”

“The roads are just warm enough for a little over freezing. So if the air temperature is hot, over freezing, it melts relatively quickly. And that’s what happens today. Now tonight it comes overnight. Things will cool down. It will last for a while. So tomorrow morning it could be a bit unstable, ”Mass warned.

Professor of atmospheric sciences said it is possible that we will experience more snow on Thursday than we saw Wednesday. And it will be pretty consistent throughout the region with about one and a half centimeters that could hit near the sea surface before it fades north of Everett. Still, the largest accumulation of snow will depend on the height.

“It can easily be two, three or even four inches if you reach 2,000 feet. Earlier this week, up in the hills over Bellevue, in some places got eight inches of snow. So that’s the problem. Height makes a big difference in this kind of marginal situation where we are not super cold, ”Mass explained.

Will a large blizzard hit Washington?

Cliff Mass said some of the weather models predict a larger blizzard next Friday.

“Some of the models have a really serious blizzard next Friday- late Thursday/Friday. So we see this one. It’s too far out in time to be sure of it, but winter is not over, ”Mass said.

He noted that the last few weeks have been particularly cold for all that talk about global warming. In fact, he says we are experiencing some of the coolest periods in the last 50 years.

“It’s pretty interesting,” Mass said.
