German cup holders Leverkusen Mount Epic Comeback to beat Koln in the quarterfinals

The reigning masters Bayer Leverkusen came down from two goals down to earn their place in the DFB cup semi-finals and defeated FC Koln 3-2 at Bayarena. Die Werkelf moves one step closer to the back-to-back cup triumphs for the first time in their history.

Still basked in the glory of their narrow triumph over Bayern Munich in the previous round, set the liver’s north basket night on fire – both in spirit and sight – when torches shrouded Bayarena in a smoked haze and forced an early break in the procedure.

Still, it was Koln who first settled in 2001/02.

Alejandro Grimaldo came twice annoyingly close to breaking the dead water, first rattling the crossbar with a fantastic free kick before narrowing the right post from close range.

When half -time approached, Leverkusen turned up the heat, but it was Gerhard Strubber’s men who started in the last minute of stopping time.

By utilizing a defensive accident, Damion Down’s first blood struck with an unstoppable strike from a tight angle, which is fantastic faithful to the game.

Die Werkelf almost struck back after the reboot when Florian Wirtz sent his rebound painfully wide by the left post after Jeremie Frimpong pulled a sharp one -handed rescue from Marvin Schwabe.

Still, their wasteful once again showed expensive, with Linton Maina, who began on a brilliant solo race before drilling a low strike past Matej Kovar in the far corner.

However, the hosts halved Koln’s lead shortly after on the hourly thanks to Patrik Schick’s unmatched tranquility inside the box when he buried a low shot from a tight angle in the right corner after picking up Wirtz’s Slick Pass.

Xabi Alonso then introduced center-forward Victor Boniface in an attempt to level out the procedure, pairing him with Schick in a rare 4-4-2 setup. The move paid off in a dramatic way as Schick finished his stiffening deep into the stopping time and nodded with Frimpong’s cross into the far corner.

Riding of the wave of Momentum repaid Boniface Alonso’s belief early for extra time and turned the match upside down with a poacher’s finish after locking on Grimaldos Lofted Pass.

It wasn’t disappointing visitors at least, with Imad Rondic, who soon buried Steffen Tigges’ passport from close range.

However, had other ideas, rejecting the strike as Boniface’s extra-time winner eventually helped Leverkusen avoid collapse in front of their homes faithfully.

Another masterful comeback means hope of ensuring successive DFB Cup titles for the first time ever remains strong.

Although the 2nd Bundesliga leaders seem good to make an immediate return to the German top-flight, Struber Rue will be his side’s defensive fragility as dreams of a rare season double go up in smoke.
