He led the Vikings to a 14-3 mark and the brim of Nr. 1-seed, a significant performance given the team’s offseason revenue and initial uncertainty in the QB position.

As NFC North turns out to be one of the toughest divisions of the last season, many did not expect Minnesota to compete seriously as it worked through a minor reconstruction and preparation of a new franchise -quarterback in rookie JJ McCarthy .

And the odds seemed to only get worse after McCarthy suffered a season -ending knee injury before the regular season even started and threw question the Vikings’ offensive plans.

But O’Connell held the faith and turned to Sam Darnold to lead Minnesota through the turmoil and led his quarterback to a career campaign as opposed to something the previous first round pick had previously experienced. Under O’Connell’s guidance, Darnold published personal best in passers-by yards (4,319), passersby touchdowns (35) and completion percentage (66.2), which also ranks top-five in the league for the first two categories. This eventually served Darnold his first Pro Bowl -nicket.

Team success followed, and the Vikings exceeded expectations with their 14-win season, including taking a winning feature of the nine-game into a week’s 18-Matchup with the Detroit Lions with No. 1 seed on the line. Although Minnesota lost this game and ended up in second place in NFC North, it still had a better record than two other division winners and tied to most wins ever of a non-no. 1 seed.

It also marked the second most victories in the franchise story, an impressive finish for O’Connell’s team.

Unfortunately, the Vikings ended ‘Success Driving in the Wild Card Round as they lost to Los Angeles Rams, 27-9, yet their performance to reach this point has achieved their coach his first AP.

In his three seasons as Viking’s main coach, O’Connell has put together a 34-17 record overall, including winning NFC North in 2022 and leading the team to two playoff performances.

For his efforts this season, O’Connell was rewarded with a multi -year contract extension that held QB Whisperer and now the coach of the year in Minnesota for the foreseeable future.
