Air flight to Nome is missing with 10 on board

Crews in the rural Alaska are searching for a plane carrying 10 people who disappeared Thursday.

Nome Fire Department, National Guard and Coast Guard are currently responding to reports of a missing Bering Air Caravan carrying 10 people.

The aircraft was 12 miles offshore, transiting from Unalakleet to Nome when its position was lost, according to the USCG.

The USCG reports that they have an HC-130 Hercules aircraft crew from Air Station Kodiak to search for its last known position.

“The aircraft will not land but will fly a grid pattern over the water and the coast in an attempt to locate the aircraft. The aircraft is equipped with special equipment for search and rescue that allows them to find objects and people without any visibility conditions,” Nome said Volunteer Fire Department.

The C-130 Coast Guard aircraft will be able to include the area and may cause a visual of the aircraft to help soil herds with GPS coordinates. Elmendorf also sends support through the Air Force.

Members of Nome Volunteer Fire Department report that they are doing an active soil search and have covered land along the coast from Nome to Topkok.

“We are currently conducting an active soil search from Nome and from White Mountain and have as much up -to -date information about the event as possible. Due to weather and visibility, we are limited on air search at the current time,” a statement from said the fire department.

“We ask the public to think of those who may be missing at this time, but due to weather and security concerns, you should not form individual search parties. Families are encouraged to seek support from Norton Sound Health Corporation,” the statement states .

Norton Sound Health Corporation has said it is “ready to respond to a medical emergency” but gave no other details.

The missing aircraft comes after back-to-back deadly aviation events in the United States last week, including the collision between a military helicopter and a passenger jet near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) and a Learjet 55 Medevac Jet crashing in Philadelphia killing At least seven people.
