Discussion:

This low -pressure system runs east on Saturday night into Sunday along the border between mild air above SEE US and the cold, Arctic air pushing southeast of Canada. The battle between these two air masses is where the storm will develop, and it must be just far enough for our south … that we mostly see snow in Hudson Valley.

Futurecast Radar: 15:00 Saturday to 7 p.m. 07.00 Sunday

The storm develops rapidly … goes from almost no Saturday morning to a decent snow producer of Saturday night. This is probably the biggest challenge with the forecast. It’s hard to tell from the graphic above, but there is very little rainfall with this system until it starts to strengthen Saturday afternoon. Because the storm develops when it reaches Hudson Valley … There is some uncertainty about how much moisture we get in the Hudson Valley area. Some of the guidance suggests that the development at the last minute limits the amount of moisture pushing into the Hudson valley … which would make snow -hotels be smaller. Our snowfall forecast reflects that concern. The farther north and east you go … the more time for storm development and more moisture is probably available.

Our preliminary forecast has 4 to 8 inches of snow for Ulster, Dutchess, Columbia & Greene counties and 3 to 6 inches for the SW part of the valley. The likelihood is that we will see a lot of 5 and 6 inches total region wide with this storm, but if the storm does not develop fast enough, we could see more 3 and 4 inches totals … especially the additional SW you are going. So so far … Our preliminary snowfall forecast reflects this opportunity for a certain dry air and late development with the range 3 to 6 inches for the SW half of the region … and 4 to 8 inches further north and east. But on average … We are currently thinking that most people will see the middle of these intervals … something like 4 to 6 … 4 to 7 inches.

As we get closer, we should get a better grip on the amount of moisture with this storm and we should be able to narrow the snowfall forecast a little more. Either way … Another winter storm with a moderate snow event is aiming for the valley. Be sure to prepare you appropriately … More updates coming.
