Justin Jefferson plays both sides of Vikings’ Darnold/McCarthy QB decision

To no surprise, the Vikings’ Quarterback situation has come up a few times as Justin Jefferson has made his Super Bowl -Ukes Media rounds in New Orleans. And to no surprise, Minnesota’s superstar has played both sides and expresses that he will do his things on the field, no matter who throws him the ball next season.

In one Interview with Yahoo! SportJefferson said he thinks JJ McCarthy will get his shot, then followed it up by saying he thinks they will bring Sam Darnold back. Of course, these two ideas are a bit contradictory.

“Jj, I feel like he definitely gets his shot and gets his opportunity to do something and see where it goes,” Jefferson said. “Just to see how he appeared before he was hurt, it certainly looked good. You have to give your first round of choices to happen, regardless.

“But having Sam is in there all season for the past year, has 14 wins, brings us to the playoffs that just don’t happen overnight. You don’t just get a quarterback from the couch and he can come and win 14 games for you I think , It would be good to have him back and to build and see where it goes.

It’s a really professional response from a guy who has been in the NFL for five years now and just reviewed another quarterback discussion last season. He knows that there would be no benefit to publicly committed to somehow, given the decision being out of his hands.

In another interview, This one with NBC SportsJefferson repeated the feeling he expressed after this season that ended (and after last season ended), which is that he is sure of his ability to thrive regardless of who plays quarterback.

“It’s funny because we pretty much (have) the same conversations as last year,” Jefferson said. “And honestly, I have the same answer. It doesn’t really matter who I’m double covered.

His track record also backs up. Jefferson put huge songs with Kirk Cousins for years, had some massive games with Nick Mullens at QB late in the 2023 season and then had a 1,500-yard campaign with Darnold last year. The chemistry is obviously there with Darnold, but there is no reason to doubt that Jefferson would continue to dominate if McCarthy gets nodded in 2025.
