Here’s what Nyers need to know about real ID driving license, Mobile ID

Albany – New Yorkers need a real ID or enhanced driver’s license, permit or non -nonder identification card to travel by flights within the United States beginning May 7. They can also use their passports to board domestic flights.

So far, 40% of 12 million New Yorkers who have state IDs have a real ID or improved card as the deadline is approaching under a federal anti-terrorist law in 2005.

Travelers would also be able to use their passports to board domestic flights. Twelve million New Yorkers have passports that are primarily used for international travel.

“We strongly urge Long Islanders and all New Yorkers who do not already have a real ID-compatible license or non-Nondriver ID to get one before before running out of time,” said Walt McClure, spokesman for The State Department of Motor Vehicles, in a written statement.

In another major initiative that is now underway, the Department of Motor Vehicles reports that more than 185,000 New Yorkers have chosen to download a picture of their data on their phones as a convenience through the optional mobile ID program. There is no deadline to download the app to join the Voluntary Mobile ID program.

What documents do I need to get a real ID license?

Necessary documents to get a real ID license, permission or non -nondriver -id include an original social security card or the federal tax documents W2, 1099, 1098 or a wage stump showing a full social security number.

Applicants also need two evidence of staying in New York State which may include:

  • A New York State driver’s license, permission or non -nonder ID card, postmarked mail, printed bank statement or tool bills if dated within 365 days after the application and contains the applicant’s address. Post contact numbers are not acceptable.
  • Proof of legal residence status, including a valid, original US passport (not a copy), a birth certificate, naturalization certificate or permanent resident card, a valid foreign passport with Visa, I94 or I551 documentation or recent and certified copies of the birth or marriage certificate. Expired or outdated documents cannot be used

How much does a real ID license cost?

There is no extra charge to get a real ID card, but all other normal transaction fees, such as renewal fees.

How do I apply?

The application may be submitted via the NEWS NY.GOV ID system online at https://digital.dmv.ny.gov/login. This service also allows applicants to check their application status at any time, day or night on any day.

A temporary document can be delivered when the application is accepted and a new real ID license, permit or nonder -IID is sent and delivered for approximately seven to 10 working days. The application and documents are scanned so that an applicant retains these items.

Any fees can be paid in cash, checking or credit card.

Do young people need real ID documents?

Federal Transportation Safety Administration does not require children under the age of 18 to be old to give identification on domestic flights if they travel with a companion who has a valid identification. The US Ministry of Homeland Security adds states: “For international trips, minors under the age of 18 must present the same travel documents as the adult.”

In New York State, air passengers over the age of 16, but under 18 years of age do not need real ID documents when traveling with a companion, but real ID documents can be achieved if preferred.

Drivers 16 years and younger than 18 years can get real ID documents if they choose, but parents or guardians must sign the applications.

Youth younger than 16 years old who are not running can choose to secure a nonder real ID with the participation and signatures of a parent or guardian.

Are default licenses outdated?

No. New Yorkers do not need a real ID-compatible license for many other purposes. A default driver’s license, permit or non -nondriver -ID that does not comply with real ID will still be valid for driving, reconciliation, entering federal buildings where identification is not required, application for or receiving federal benefits, access to healthcare and calls and get help from the police. A default identification is also valid to participate in law enforcement negotiations or investigations or to participate in activities protected by the US Constitution, such as the defendant’s right to litigation.

Is an ‘improved’ license in accordance with real ID?

Yes. An enhanced driver’s license, permit or non -nonder ID can continue to be used for identification on domestic flights starting on May 7th.

An improved license, permit or non -nonder -IID can also be used to travel to Canada and Mexico ashore or sea and to some countries in the Caribbean. But an improved ID is not acceptable identification for air travel between these countries. New Yorkers can contact a travel agency or cruise line or the specific countries that will be visited to verify the necessary documents.

To obtain an improved license, proof of citizenship is required. This proof includes a valid US passport, birth certificate or naturalization certificate.

If documents used to prove appear with a nickname or abbreviated name, additional proof is required with the legal name or the proof of a court -ordered name change.

What do I do if I changed my name?

If the applicant’s name has changed once or more times, for example, due to marriage or divorce, the proof of each change, such as a marriage certificate or divorce document, must be given.

A DMV employee will help applicants, but all forms must be completed and all required documents must be secured before the visit. The DMV employee can help applicants to carry out their applications if necessary.

What is a mobile ID?

All New Yorkers may be able to add a digital version of their state driver’s license, permission or Nondriver ID card by downloading an app on their smartphone. The mobile ID, also called MID, is free and optional. New Yorkers are not required to get a middle.

What are the benefits of a mobile ID?

The Department of Motor Vehicles says the mobile ID is a secure version of a license, permit or nondriver IID that can be transported as a convenience instead of the traditional card. Center can be used at bars, restaurants and shops that agree to accept. Similarly, not all law enforcement authorities accept the mid as proof of identification.

The state warns that mid is not replacing a license, permit or nondriver IID, and holders should not throw these documents.

How do you get access to the middle?

An Android 7 or newer version or an iPhone 6 or a newer model is needed to download MID. A user must activate the Facial ID or Touch -ID and set the region to “USA.” The app cannot be loaded onto a phone where the restrictions or limitations have changed.

Registration requires taking a picture of the front and back of the latest, valid license, permission or nonder ID card. The cards should be readily read or replaced before accessing mid.

No Wi-Fi or Mobile Phone Coverage requires downloading the app.

No Wi-Fi or cell phone coverage is required to use in the middle of a bar, restaurant or other participating place.

But users sometimes have to access Wi-Fi or mobile phone cover to keep the middle updated with DMV posts.

Step-for-step-instructions and more information is available at https://dmv.ny.gov/id-card/mobile-id-mid

Is there a concern for security?

DMV said that mid cannot and will not be able to track its users in the future.

However, allegations on social media and the New York Civil Liberties Union warn that Mid could be used – perhaps in future versions – to track the user at the expense of personal privacy.

While privacy is widespread online, there is no evidence that New York or any government can use the technology to track its users.
