The Government Hochul orders temporary shutdown of live bird markets in several new areas due to cases of bird flu

The government Kathy Hochul announced this morning that she has ordered the temporary shutdown of all living bird markets in New York City, Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk counties.

Inspectors discovered seven cases of bird flu in poultry during routine inspections in live bird markets in Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens.

The government Hochul says she issued the order out of an abundance of caution. The order is in effect from today until next Friday, February 14.

In the week -long period, no poultry can be delivered to these markets, the governor said.

“Each unaffected market must sell all inventory, review thorough cleaning and disinfection. And then remain closed for at least 5 days,” said Hochul during a news briefing.

Before the reopening, the markets will be inspected.

Despite the closures, the governor said there is no immediate threat of public health.
