Five winter storms could deliver more snow to the midwest and northeast than the last two winters together

The second of five storms throwing the eastern half of the United States with snow and ice over a two -week period is on the way – and this one has more snow than the first.

The first storm released deadly severe weather, life -threatening flooding and dangerous ice and snow as it ran across the Midwest and northeast Wednesday and Thursday.

The next storm was already slamming into the west coast late on Thursday and fighting east through Northern Rockies Friday. It will move so fast that it will take less than 72 hours before it goes coast to coast, and delivers heavy snow to the Midwest on Saturday and the northeastern Saturday night and Sunday.

More than 80 million people all over the United States are expected to be affected by “a cut of disturbing and dangerous winter weather” during the Super Bowl weekend, National Weather Service said.

The storms are driven by the jet stream, essentially a river of air in the atmosphere that storms flow through. It is locked in an almost perfect line from west to east and will continue to sneak fast storms over the northern level of the lower 48.

New storms arrive every few days until the jet stream changes something that may not happen until mid-February. So more snow could pile up the next two weeks in some parts of the east, including Boston and New York City than happened in the last two winters combined.

Snow from the next storm begins early Saturday over the northern plains and Upper Midwest. Defeating will expand when the storm increases by atmospheric energy to the south. A mixture of rain and freezing rain will extend from Missouri to the central Appalachians on Saturday morning, while snow falls over the big lakes.

The storm will drop a widespread area of 3 to 6 inches of snow from central Minnesota through Central Michigan. Lower snow -lotals are expected south of this line of heavier snow: Chicago may end up with less than an inch slush while Detroit looks an inch.

It could be dry between the two areas of winter rainfall on Saturday morning in an area from Chicago to Cleveland. An icy mixture fills these dry areas in the afternoon.

A mixture of freezing rain, gossip and snow spreads over Pennsylvania by Saturday night. The same messy blend spreads through New Jersey, New York City and Long Island shortly after. Snow -Totals will climb higher than Thursday’s storm in large parts of New England and Upstate New York.

At least 6 inches of snow are possible from key parts of New York to southern Maine and across large parts of southern New England. Snow hotels could approach the double-digit brand from Syracuse, New York, to Boston.

Boston could be buried at a foot of snow on Saturday night and Sunday, which would be more snow than fell all last winter. The city has not had double -digit snowfall in a single day of just over three years.

The storm will end in the middle of the morning Sunday in large parts of the northeast. Some snow could dwell into the early afternoon in Maine and Coastal New England.

There will only be a short break in winter weather in the east to start next week before another storm.

The exact timing and the extent of next week’s winter weather still come into focus, but the far -reaching storm could develop in the plains as soon as Monday night. It will strengthen and rainfall encloses much of the eastern half of the United States overnight Monday and Tuesday.

It is still unclear exactly how far north snow, gossip and freezing rain could spread, but anywhere from Mississippi and Tennessee Valley’s north into the Midwest and the northeast can be in the storm’s way.

Another very similar storm could develop in the plains right after the midweek. Next week’s first storm will affect how this one develops and moves, so we don’t know more specific expected details until next week.

That’s not all. Another cross -country storm could develop next weekend and bring more snow and ice to the eastern half of the United States.

Snow -Totales are climbing rapidly as Storm, after Storm hits the northeast – something that has not happened in the region in recent years.

Boston was to detect approx. 3 feet of snow each winter, but less than 2 meters fell in the last two winters together. This upcoming stretch could bring 1 to 2 feet of snow to the city, depending on the ultimate track of each storm.

A similar scenario could unfold in New York City. Less than 10 inches of snow carpeted the city in the last two winters, but this amount could be poured into this busy stretch.
