A federal judge on Friday refused to block Elon Musk’s government’s cost -saving department to access the US Ministry of Labor, an initial setback for the public staff associations that opposed his efforts to shrink the federal bureaucracy.

The temporary decision of US district judge John Bates in Washington, DC, is the first step in a lawsuit against the work department of one of the largest US unions claiming that billionaire Musk could get sensitive information about investigations of his own Businesses and competitors by accessing government computer systems.

Bates gave up that “although the court has concerns about defendants’ alleged behavior,” the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organization (AFL-Cio) did not show that it was harmed by the Labor Department’s actions. AFL-CIO president Liz Shuler said in a statement that the decision was “a setback but not a defeat” and that the union would provide more evidence of supporting his claims.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Labor did not immediately respond to a request for a comment that was sent late on Friday.

President Donald Trump has deputed Musk, the world’s richest person and owner of the electric vehicle company Tesla, Space Technology Company SpaceX and other companies leading the so -called Department of Government Efficiency or DODE to identify fraud and waste in government.

Musk’s efforts have troubled legislators and advocates that say he exceeds his authority by trying to dismantle agencies responsible for critical government programs and firefighters workers in a lot.

Another group of federal staff associations and pensioners have sued the Ministry of Finance to block what it says is the illegal transmission of sensitive payment registers to DOGE staff. Treasury temporarily accepted Wednesday not to give additional access while the case is playing out.

In the trial of work department, the AFL-CIO asked the right to block what it said was Musk’s upcoming plan to access departmental systems.

The union, which represents approx. 800,000 government workers said it would potentially provide musk access to non-public information from Business Safety and Health Administration probes to SpaceX, Tesla and his tunnel company, the boring company, as well as exploring his competitors.

The union also said that DOGE in the absence of court intervention could access the Bureau of Labor Statistics data on the economy and sensitive information about government employees, including the identity of those who have submitted work compensation requirements or sought protection for wages and Times complaints.

The White House has said Musk will regain himself from cases where he has a conflict of interest. As a so -called specialist, he is subject to some, but not all conflict of interest and ethical rules for federal workers. Musk’s rapid acquisition of US state agencies has enabled the South African-born businessman to exercise unprecedented control over America’s 2.2 million member federal workforce and begin a dramatic transformation of the government.

Musk has already moved to close the US Agency of International Development and says USAID cancels scores of government consultancy contracts and under -utilized lease contracts.
