Republican lawmakers suggest Bill to quit DC’s Home Rule

Two Republican members of Congress have proposed a bill to end DC’s Home Rule and take a jab with the mayor of the city in his name.

The proposed bill would revoke DC Home Rule Act of 1973There is the opportunity to have control over its own local affairs, including the ability to elect a mayor, a council for representatives and advisory neighborhood commissioners who manage concerns about the neighborhood. Congress still has the authority to review all legislation passed by the DC Council, and the president appoints the city’s judges.

While the district still has no voting representation in Congress, it has a non-voted delegate part. Eleanor Holmes-Norton, who has served as the city’s representative since 1991.

Lee and Ogles proposed the new bill and expressed their concern about the city’s alleged “failure to prevent violent crime, corruption and reconciliation of non-citizens,” a joint statement reads.

The bill would cancel the DC’s Home Rule one year after passage.

In response, DC Rep said. Oye Owolewa that the bill was “nothing but an attempt to remove our autonomy and undermine the votes of more than 700,000 Americans calling DC home.” Recently released police data also shows that Carjackings are down in DC with 48%, and armed carjackings are down by 52%.

“DC residents serve in the military, pay federal taxes and contribute to this country like any other American. Yet, time and time again, we are forced to defend our basic right to self -government from those who do not represent us and do not understand the needs of our society, ”added Owolewa.

Since 2021, Owolewa has served as the city’s shadow representative, lobbying for DC state and the ability to vote in Congress.
