FDA is reminiscent of more than 2 million cases of donuts

The Food and Drug Administration has classified a recall of 60 different donut products to its second highest level, announced the agency earlier this week in an update to its website.

The recall was first announced on January 7, but it was classified by the FDA as a “Class II -Back Call” on February 5th.

The recalled products were produced by FGF brands and were sold in grocery stores across the United States and Canada, the FDA report said on the recall. The total recall amounts to more than 2 million cases of donuts, fritters, paczki, eclairs and munchkins.

The products were all produced before December 13, 2024 and are “within the outlet,” says the FDA enforcement report.

Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria that may have contaminated donuts, can cause listeriosis if consumed, the Disease Control and Prevention website said.

“Estimated 1,600 people get listeriosis every year, and about 260 die,” the CDC said.

Those with the highest risk of listeria are “pregnant women and their newborn, adults aged 65 or older and people with weakened immune systems,” the agency said. Other groups “rarely become seriously ill” when exposed to Listeria, the CDC noted.

Unborn infants are at particular risk of listeria, CDC said.

“Infection during pregnancy results in foster loss in about 20% of cases and newborn death in about 3% of cases,” the agency said.

These are issued when there is “a situation where the use of or exposure to a violation product can cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the likelihood of serious negative health consequences is remote,” FDA’s website said.
