Winter storms threaten 90 million Americans throughout the United States

A fast -moving winter storm that packs a dangerous combination of snow, gossip and ice moves through the Midwest on Saturday afternoon, with up to a foot of snow predicted in parts of the northeast Sunday morning.

Over 84 million people from the Midwest to the Northeast are under extensive winter alarms, according to the National Weather Service. The storm is already causing delays with flight and it can cause dangerous traffic conditions and power disorder.

More than 2,200 flights within, in or out of the United States have been delayed or canceled Saturday according to site Flight Tracking Flight Aware. And more than 470 flights have already been canceled.

“Due to a winter storm over the Northeast, Boston Logan expects delays and cancellations,” Airport said Saturday afternoon.

On Earth, the storm will produce “dangerous journeys due to low visibility, snow -covered and smooth roads. Power cuts and minor wood damage are possible where ice is the heaviest, ”warns the weather services.

At Saturday night, up to 8 inches of snow are expected in parts of the upper large lakes. As the storm pushes east to Sunday morning, Upstate New York and southern New England could look up to a foot of snow. Meanwhile, a wintry blend of snow, gossip and freezing rain from the Ohio Valley is expected into northern mid-Atlantic, with light ice collections.

“This storm could create dangerous travel conditions with almost zero visibility at times,” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul warned Friday When she declared an emergency. The governor activated emergency protocols, including accelerated salt supplies, and waived trucker lessons to accelerate road treatment.

The storm system moves in two rounds: the first brings heavy snow to the Midwest on Saturday afternoon, followed by significant snowfall in parts of the northeast, combined with icy conditions in Appalachians.

Where to expect snow and ice

More weather systems affect the northeastern over the next 72 hours, NWS Northeast River forecast Center said on x Thursday. Under-normal temperatures are probably in large parts of the continental United States for the next few weeks, the agency said. This combination of active weather and prolonged cold can cause a continued stretch of winter disorders for many Americans.

  • Green Bay, Wisconsin: Winter Storm Warning until 7 p.m. 21 Saturday, 4-8 inches of snow expected
  • Chicago: Winter Weather Advisory until 7 p.m.
  • Cleveland: Mixed rainfall expected with up to 1 inch of snow and sleet and up to 0.2 inch Isaccumulation from 1 pm. 13 Saturday to 7 p.m. 1 Sunday
  • Washington, DC: Winter weather advisory until 7 p.m. 19 Saturday and expect mixed rainfall with up to 1 inch of snow and sleet
  • Philadelphia: Winter weather advisor from noon Saturday to 7 p.m. 6 Sunday, with a chance to snow transform into a rain and gossip mixture after midnight
  • New York City: 3-5 inches of snow and gossip expected after 7 p.m. 18 Saturday
  • Boston: Winter Storm Warning after 7 p.m. 22 Saturday, with 4-7 inches of snow expected

Storm’s timing coincides with the Super Bowl weekend, which potentially complicates travel plans for fans on the way to New Orleans. Airports at major nodes such as Chicago, Detroit and Boston are preparing for delays and cancellations due to snow and ice over the weekend.

The weather service warned on Saturday that Close fog Near airports in Louisiana can complicate arrivals for thousands of fans traveling to New Orleans for Sunday’s games. But in the big easy celebrating football festivals, they will enjoy mild weather with heights in the low 80s.

Another two systems are on the horizon next week, with another Arctic explosion expected to push temperatures 10 to 20 degrees under seasonal norms over the northeast. Meteorologists attribute this active pattern to the placement of the jet stream, which is to storm storms over the northern United States.

The jet stream, essentially a river of air in the atmosphere that storms flows through, is locked in an almost perfect line from west to east and will continue to funnel fast storms over the northern level of the lower 48.

This pattern has been responsible for maintaining temperatures with lower than average in large parts of the country this winter. New storms are expected to arrive every few days until the jet stream changes – something that may not happen until the second half of February.

This weekend’s storms are just part of what forecasters expect will be an active February for winter weather.
