Syracuse survives poor free throwing shooting to beat Boston College into 3 overtime

Syracuse, new – they say free kick is free, but they turned out to be expensive Saturday when First Syracuse and then Boston College spilled more chances of winning.

In the end, it was Boston College’s repetition of some unanswered free kick from Orange that helped Syracuse pull a 95-86 victory in triple over time at JMA Wireless Dome.

First, it was Syracuse who saw a gift horse in the mouth. Orange missed eight of its 12 free throwing attempts in regulation, including the front end of three 1-1 options in the last 45 seconds, opening a door to Boston College Guard Fred Payne’s game-binding 3-Point to send the game to Overtime.

Syracuse, which led with five points with one minute back in the game, missed the front end of three 1-1-fricast options. JJ Starling missed two of them with the last one come with 9.1 seconds left and SU clings to a 67-64 lead.

Boston College had to inbound the ball twice in the last 9 seconds.

Syracuse could have sent BC to the bad line, but chose not to bother.

That was when the madness started, and it wouldn’t end until the two teams had acted chances of winning in the first and second overtime before Syracuse finally withdrew in the third extra period.

Syracuse Outscored Boston College 10 to 1 on third overtime.

Syracuse improved to 11-13 on the season and 5-8 in ACC. The victory gave Orange a sweep of the season series with BC. Eagles fell to 10-13 overall and 2-10 at the conference.

After Syracuse spread its chance of winning in regulation, it was Boston College who blew a chance to win the game at first overtime. The Eagles had the ball with the game tied, but BC Guard Joshua Beadle turned the ball into the field with 4 seconds left.

Syracuse rushed the ball upcourt, but Starling’s running jumper pulled Iron and the teams on their way to another overtime.

In the second overtime, BC scored the first seven points to take an 83-76 lead. Syracuse itched back in the game and closed within 83-82 on Starlings two free kicks with 1:04 back.

Starling had a chance to finish the comeback as he went to the line with SU down 85-84 with 11 seconds left. Starling made the first to tie the game, but missed the second.

Boston College had a chance to win, but Su Guard Kyle Cuffe stripped the ball from Donald Hand. Cuffes Halfcourt Heave hit the back of the edge and the teams went against a third ot.

While Syracuse struggled at the free throwing line and went 18-for-32 for the day, Boston College was even worse. Eagles went 9-for-18 on the line.

It included Hand, ACC’s leading free throwing shooters who went 3-for-8 on the line. Hand came into Saturday’s game 101-for-111 on free throw for the season. His five misses on Saturday were half the number of free throw he had missed the whole season.

Hand missed two free kicks with 24 seconds back on the second overtime as Boston College led 85-84. It gave Starling a chance to tie the game on the line with 11 seconds to go. Starling tied it with his first shot, but missed the second.

Hand and Starling both ended with 28 points despite their free -throwing shooting matches. Syracuse Center Eddie Lampkin had 14 points and 18 rebounds.

Before the game, SU officials announced that Syracuse -Nybar Donnie Freeman, who had been out of Orange’s last nine games, would have a procedure next week on his wounded right foot and would miss the rest of the season.

Syracuse took a 10-point lead with 9 minutes back in the game when Lampkin dunked by a lovely feed from Jaquan Carlos. Lampkins Slam made the scoring 59-49, representing Orange’s biggest lead of the game.

However, Boston College scored nine equal points and closed within 59-58 on hand 3-pointer with just under 5 minutes left.

After taking his 10-point lead, Syracuse Scoreless went for 4 and a half minutes. Chris Bell finally finished the drought with a short jumper in the field for a 61-58 lead with 4:25 left in the game.

Syracuse closed the first half on a 9-0 race to take a 34-27 lead into the break.

Syracuse-Nybiker Elijah Moore started the race with a 3-pointer. Moore scored 11 points in the first half. He scored the first eight points in the game for Orange, then sat for about 10 minutes, but immediately after returning to the game drilled a 3-pointer to start the 9-0 race.
