Welterweights

Jake Matthews (20-7, 13-7 UFC) against Francisco Prado (12-2, 1-2 UFC)

Odds: Matthews (-225), Prado (+185)

Matthews was one of UFC’s earliest hopes for an Australian star when “The Celtic Child” was a fresh face 19-year-old with a wealth of the reverse centered around an impressive wrestling and fighting game. Matthews had his moments, but never fully met his expected heights as easy as he tended to be stopped against several physical opponents. It became less of a problem when he moved up to welter weight where his body was able to fill and make him a much more effective bully. However, Matthews has slowly driven to a style that does not take so much benefit of his physical gifts. He can fight a little as needed, but he is now much more comfortable as a patient attack that seems to remain defensive and choose his spots. There are times when Matthews still looks particularly sharp, especially in his victory in 2022 over other fialho, but it is an approach that has also led him to some frustrating losses against better athletes who are simply more willing to pick up the pace . After beating Phil Rowe in 2024, Matthews gets what looks like a windbar battle against Argentina’s prado that makes a movement up from easy.

Still only 22 years old, Prado’s emblematic for the current crop of Argentine views that have the athletic capacity to run over a weak cycle, but have to end things against better competition. So far, Prado has managed to knock out Ottman Azitar, but has done little, but shows his toughness and durability in some hard -fought losses. There are some ways this can go sideways for Matthews, who sometimes have its battles against more aggressive resistance, but unless this movement up in weight unlocks something unexpected for prado, this is similar to a battle where the Australian can cross to victory. The choice is Matthews through decision.
