Running for banners, tournament spots someone guessing

Saturday, March 8, is the last day of the regular season of the NCAA Division in the Hockey of Hockey, the day when Hockey East and NCHC close their league plans, the last of the six conferences to do so.

This means that there are only four weeks left until college hockey fully switches to tournament mode. A look at the conference position gives the promise of exciting league races that are likely to go down to the cord.

Currently, the biggest gap between teams in first and second place in Atlantic Hockey, where Sacred Heart has only five-point edge on Holy Cross. In NCHC there is a tie at the top of the position. ECAC Hockey (a point), The Big 10 (two) and Hockey East (Three) are also airtight. In CCHA, which will be decided by winning a percentage rather than points, a beginning Augustana program is trying to hold the Perennial League Power Minnesota State.

Of course, there are also national consequences such as team jockey for the 16 seats in the NCAA tournament. On the weekend alone, there is more than a dozen game where both teams rank among the 25 best in pairing locations:

The Big Gadowsky:

Army West Point Defender Mac Gadowsky (So., Fairbanks, Alaska) picked up an assist in Tuesday’s loss on Bentley and expanded his score to nine games.

It ties the longest point line of a defender in the NCAA Division I-Men’s Hockey this season and matches the nine games produced by Dartmouths CJ Foley (So., Hanover, Mass.) And Denver’s Eric Pohlkamp (So., Brainerd, Minn.) Earlier this year.

Gadowsky’s 11 goals in 27 games this season tops the country’s defenders, while his 27 points only trail the 29 sent by Denver’s Zeev BUIUM (So., San Diego, California).


Alaska Goalrush:

Speaking of stripes, alaska f Matt Hubbarde (Sr., Pickering, Ontario) has scored at least one goal in each of its last six matches tying Boston College’s Ryan Leonard (So., Amherst, Mass.) For the longest active finish trim in the country.

Hubbarde, who has matched the 12 goals he made up over his first three NCAA seasons, has turned on the lamp nine times during his current hot streak. He leads Nanooks with a career hill 20 points in 23 competitions this season.

Minnesota Junior F. Jimmy Snuggerud (Chaska, Minn.) Infected his 20th goal of the season in Friday’s 5-2 win over Wisconsin and hit this plateau for the third time in so many years.

According to Minnesota Men’s Hockey Communications Director Scott Slarks, Snuggerud was Just the third golden gopher To score 20-Plus times in each of its first three years, joined the program John Mayasich and Dick Dougherty, both of whom did it in 1953-54.

Last weekend’s NCHC series between Denver and visitors Omaha was one for the recordbooks.
