Google Maps changes the Gulf of Mexicog name for us users

The president signed an executive order on his first day in the office of renaming Mexico Golf to the Gulf of America and changing the name of the highest mountain top in North America from Denali to Mount McKinley. From press time, the name “Denali” has not yet changed on Google Maps.

The company said it would update briefly in the United States after the geographical name information system (GNIs) made the changes. Trump’s executive order gave the Interior Minister 30 days to implement the name changes and update the GNIs to reflect them.

Former President Barack Obama changed the name of Mountain Peak from Mount McKinley to Denali in 2015 in honor of local native groups’ names to the Alaska Mountain.

According to Trump’s order, the surrounding National Park area will keep the name Denali National Park and Preserve, and the Minister of the Interior “will work with Alaska native entities and state and local organizations to adopt the names of landmarks to honor the history and culture of Alaskan – people.

The renovation at the federal level has been a complex commitment to state agencies and offices.

Historically, the board of geographical names and the US geological study would immediately act to update the GNIs. The Department of State would update Geographic Names server that defines geographical function names outside the US. However, it is up to each agency and office to update their own sites accordingly.

Outside of the United States, other countries may not recognize the name changes.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said in January that “for us and for the whole world it is still the golf of Mexico.”

Google previously said that when official names vary between countries, users will see users see the official name used in their country, while the rest of the world will see both names. The company said this was also in line with long -term politics.
