Champions League Last 16: Who plays Who?

We don’t know yet. UEFA apparently thinks that another thing missing in the old Champions League format was several drag ceremonies, and therefore they made the last 16-made separate from last month’s play-off-made.

In practice at each play-off pairing that they could meet one of two automatically qualified teams in the next phase, but will not find out exactly who it is until they have gone through, then a draw to reveal the last 16 And over that will will not be held on February 21 at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.

And that’s what makes things complicated. Liverpool and Barcelona, who finished first and second in the table to go straight through to the last 16, know that they will meet one of Monaco, Benfica, Paris or Brest in the next round.

It is as far as they can narrow it, much less knows, even what half of the draw they will be in, as first and second, third and fourth and so on are gathered at this point – with one of each pair that ends in the opposite halves of the draw.

Hopefully the graphics below can go a way to offer a visual explanation to clean things up a bit.
