Highlights from Best In Show

The last hardships of a fantastic series of events come to their conclusion Tuesday, where the best in the show will be awarded at Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.

What started when more than 2,500 dogs across 200 breeds are down to only seven. Winners have been awarded to the seven main categories of hound, toys, non-sports, working, sporting, terrier and crew.

These dogs are now competing for triumph like Sage, the miniature poodle, did at last year’s best in the show. This time the competition will be among Bourbon The Whippet, Neal The Bichon Frisé, Comet Shih Tzu, Mercedes the German shepherd and winners of the sporting, work and terrier groups. Results for these groups have not yet been announced.

FS1 will have TV coverage from Madison Square Garden on the decisive day of the event 2. It includes a pre -show that starts at 1 p.m. 7pm one, followed immediately by the main event at the best in the show.

The best in show will compete among these fine dogs from the seven groups.

Hound Group: Bourbon Whippet

Non-Sports Group: Neal Bichon Frisé

Toy Group: Comet the Shih Tzu

Paving group: Mercedes the German shepherd

The sporting group, working group and Terrier Group winners will be named Tuesday before the judges award the best in the show award.

Tuesday 11th February: Preliminary assessment continues in the remaining three groups (Javits Center), where the top finishers advance to the best racing competition. (Madison Square Garden).

Best in Show Heads will be announced after the judges end on Tuesday night.

Dog Show Day 2

The dog show is broadcast on FS1 and FS2.

This year, Westminster Kennel Club, however, returns the show back to Madison Square Garden and Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City.

For the past two years, it has been held in Usta Billie Jean King National Tennis Center – place for the US Open – in nearby Flushing Meadows, New York, with the best in show winner crowned on the field at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Westminster was previously held in Madison Square Garden until 2020, but moved to Lyndhurst Estate in Tarrytown, New York in 2021 and 2022 due to Coronavirus Pandemic. – Steve Gardner

More than 2,500 dogs from 201 different breeds will participate in this year’s Westminster Dog Show.

The participating dogs are divided into seven categories:

  • Hound
  • Toy
  • Non-sports
  • Works
  • Sporting
  • Terrier
  • Crew

The first four groups are judged Monday; The remaining three are judged on Tuesday.

The seven different racial groups are evaluated based on the standard set by their parent company, which means that competing dogs are not compared to other competitors, but with the ideal proportions, weight and size, main shape, gait and other qualities of the breed.

When a dog wins its breed, it is judged within its group. Group winners then move on to the best category. – Steve Gardner

“Sage,” The Miniature Poodle, won the best in Show Honor on the 148th annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show last May and beat over 2,500 dogs on more than 200 different breeds for the ultimate prize. Sage, a three-year-old from Houston, Texas, was handled by Kaz Hosaka in the last show of his career.
