Winter Storm hits DC: Snow, ice that causes dangerous travel conditions

Snow began to fall into the DC metro area around 2 p.m. 14 Tuesday, starting as lightweight, fine flakes before they intensified as heavier snow bands pushed north.

As conditions deteriorate, says Fox 5’s Caitlin Roth that travel could become dangerous throughout the night.

Further south, Fredericksburg experienced heavily snowfall, which led to significant accumulation (4.5 inches). Similar conditions are expected to spread north into the metro area.

Radar images show widespread snowfall throughout the region with the heaviest accumulations reported in Spotsylvania and Stafford -emergence as well as parts of the southern Maryland.

Areas under Winter Storm warnings, including Charlottesville and Beaverdam, Virginia (highlighted in pink on weather maps), supports for significant snowfall plots around 5-8 inches.

Baltimore, Hagerstown and Frederick, Maryland remain during winter weather counseling.

These areas expect lower accumulation but still experience snow -covered roads and reduced visibility.

In DC, temperatures have dropped to less than 33 degrees in Reagan National Airport, with visibility reduced to only one kilometer.

Officials urge drivers to stay away from the roads if possible when conditions worsen in the evening.

A Winter Storm warning has been issued from 1 p.m. 13 this afternoon until 7 p.m.

Further north in parts of Maryland, Extreme Western Allegany and Garrett counties and in Western Mineral County in West Virginia, a winter weather advice is in effect from 1 p.m. 11 Tuesday morning to 7 Wednesday.

Heavy evening snow over the DC region

The heaviest snowfall speeds are expected between 7 p.m. 17 and midnight, which contributes to most of the accumulation.

Snow is expected to be putting overnight, giving way to Ryding Heaven Wednesday Morning.

The DC metro area is expected to receive 4 to 6 inches of snow, where localized areas to the north potentially look up to 8 inches, while total to the south may be lower.

Travel conditions

As conditions continue to develop, officials advise residents to stay informed, show caution on roads and avoid unnecessary journeys until the storm passes.

BWI Airport:

Due to low ceilings, there was a traffic management program in force for traffic arriving at Baltimore-Washington International Airport. FAA reported that operations returned to normal at about 1 p.m. 20
