Big picture: Australia affected by injury, retirement; Sl not at the party

Australia’s four-day victory in Galle gave them extra 24 hours before they flicked into a one-day state as they enter a short period of preparation for Champions Trophy 2025. Originally there was just a single Odi in Colombo, but for a second was pressed, in which basically will be the team’s warm -ups before going to Pakistan.

Six players are added to the originally selected group: Jake-Fraser McGurk, Cooper Connolly, Sean Abbott, Ben Dwarshuis, Spencer Johnson and Tanveer Sangha. It is likely that they all get at least one of the two matches in Sri Lanka, as some of those who played both tests get a short break. Smith seems to take the captain.

It seems that Head and Matt Short will form the first choice opening partnership, although Fraser-McGurk could enter a late post. He and Short fought in the home series against Pakistan in November. Another point of interest is whether Alex Carey finds a place in the middle order.

Sri Lanka missed the Champions Trophy because of their poor ODI -World Championship, so these matches have suffered immediate context, though they may have half an eye on the road to 2027. They have played it though Most matches in the format since the previous World Cup (21), who chops 13 wins in that time including five series of wins. Ironically, they are probably as matched to the one-day format as anyone.

In the limelight: Dunith Wellalage and Matt Short

It was during Australia’s previous visit to Sri Lanka in 2022 Dunith Wellalage Burst on the international stage with nine wickets in five matches. He played only a bit-divided role in the World Cup in 2023, but each side of this tournament required five-wicket features against India in the Asia Cup and last year’s Odi series. He has also shown his skill with bats with a top score of 67 not out in a tied match against India. Obviously, an important part of Sri Lanka’s future.
Matt Short Could not quite use his apartment at the top of the order against Pakistan, but the absence of Mitchell Marsh means he is likely to find a place in the first election XI. His 109 out of 54 balls for Adelaide strikers against Brisbane Heat in BBL was a reminder of what he can bring against the white ball. His offspin is another practical string to his bow and he is an excellent field.

HOLD NEWS: STARC will probably rest

Given the strange nature of this series and the short turn, it is difficult to know what each side will do. It was announced on Wednesday that Mitchell Starc had withdrawn from Champions Trophy and were also not available to these two ODDs.
