Chicago Weather: Heavy Snow to Impact Wednesday Pendants, Cold Temps to Follow

Advice on winter weather has been issued for large parts of Chicagoland warning of dangerous travel conditions all day Wednesday.

The advisory covers Mchenry, Lake (IL), Dekalb, Kane, Dupage, Cook, Lasalle, Kendall, Grundy, Will, Kankakee, Lake (in), Porter, Laporte, Newton and Jasper Counties from Kl. 9 Wednesday to 7 p.m. 3 Thursday.

What we know:

Light Snow showers will develop overnight and continue into Wednesday morning before the main system arrives around 10 pm. 9-10.

The heaviest snowfall is expected between 7 p.m. 11 and 18, with the rates that reach 1 inch per hour at times. Snowfall plots generally vary from 3 to 6 inches, with isolated areas near the lake may look up to 7 inches.

In the evening, the snow intensity drops, but some areas may see a mixture of freezing rain or sleet, especially south of I-80. Snow is deterred after midnight.

What is the next one:

As the storm moves out, temperatures drop significantly. Thursday’s high will be set at midnight in the low 20s, but daytime temperatures fall into teens.

Friday morning will be especially cold, with low close to 0 degrees before heating a little in the 20s. Another round of snow is possible Friday night to Saturday, which brings further accumulation, although the details are still uncertain.

Sunday stays cold, with morning snow showers that allow for dry but freed conditions. Subzero temperatures are probably Monday morning when the deep freezing settles.

What you can do:

  • Plan for difficult travel Wednesday afternoon and evening.
  • Keep an eye on forecasts for updates on Friday evening’s potential snowfall.
  • Prepare for bitter cold temperatures on the way into next week.
