More about ABC and Rookie:

In the heart of the hour, however, it will be the fan-favorite relationship between Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) and Tim Bradford (Eric Winter). After Tim’s shocking decision to break up with Lucy in the middle of Season 6, the Exe have navigated how to move on in their professional working conditions after crossing the line between Platonic and romantic in Season 5.

At the end of Season 6 final Tim Lucy thanked for saving his life and declared that he would spend the rest of his life trying to make it up to her in whatever “small doses” she would allow , and clearly felt remorse to orchestrate their parts. But in Season 7 premiere, the Exe seemed to be back on good terms and even accepted to make a playful effort about who could train the better rookie. If you were wondering what happened to this relationship between seasons you’re not alone.

“I was also like, ‘what happens? Help me understand because I feel confused, especially when we were moving through the first episode and (ShowRunner) Alexi (Hawley) really wanted us to bring the old ‘Chenford’ Banter, Experience, Joy, Play Disease, ‘O’NEIL TV GUIDE told in a profound interview last week. Be like, ‘I don’t understand it. Am I not mad at him? Did I receive flowers I am unaware of?

In the end, O’Neil said she realized that moving on from the break -up was eventually designed to “get us back to the place where (‘Chenford’ the dynamics) is funny” and to “emphasize that These guys are professionals, and yes, their dynamics were a little messy, but they are here and they can do this.

This line between personal and professional is becoming more and more blurry when Gray decides to give Chen and Bradford the unromantic allocation of running a “trip in your ex” stand outside the district. In TV Guide’s exclusive Sneak Peek from Tuesday’s episode, Chen and Bradford can be seen listening to a woman (Kung Fu‘s Shannon Dang), who is convinced that her ex-boyfriend is the serial killer that the police have been looking for. Of course, the evidence does not add.

While Tim is quick to tell the woman (maybe a little too hard) that her ex cheated on her, Lucy reminds him that a recent online video – which is part of the cold open in this episode – felt him as “grumpy Cop, ”and Tim decides to soften his delivery after all this time it seems that Lucy is one of the only people who can soften Tim’s hard exterior.

“It’s been fun to see that quarrel has the extra layer of a romantic story with someone,” O’Neil said of Lucy and Tim. “It’s nice to see them come back in a playful space, but now there is this subtitle that did not exist before when the quarrel happened because it (romantic) relationship had not existed yet. So there is the whole other layer that Going on, and for the people who set themselves up to the little aspects, I think there are funny little nuggets to pick up.

Eagle-eyed fans by that There is a hotel room scene between Lucy and Tim In this episode – will they slip back into their old dynamics, or will Lucy decide that her relationship with Tim is now old story? Only time will show.

Rookie Shipped Tuesdays at. 10/9c on ABC. Episodes are streaming the next day at Hulu. Come back to TV Guide after this episode to O’Neil’s full interview with TV Guide.
