Anthony Rendon out “long -term” after hip surgery

Angels third Baseman Anthony Rendon is scheduled to undergo hip surgery and will face a “long -term” absence, announced General Manager Perry Minasian to the angels beat this morning (Link via Sam Blum of the Athletic).

Rendon, 34, enters the sixth season of a seven-year-old, $ 245 mm contract that has proven to be a disastrous mistake to the Angels organization. He played 52 of 60 possible matches during his first season with Halos and looked like the star they had hoped to sign and cut .286/.418/.497 in 232 record performances. It’s been all downhill from there.

Over the past four seasons, Rendon has played 205 of possible 648 games (31.6%) and placed an anemic .231/.329/.336 batting line. Rendon dating back to 2021 has had a staggering 12 different IL placements. This hip procedure will take into account his 13. .

As Minasian explains, Rendon had a setback during his offseason -rehabilitation work, which led to the upcoming operation. Even before that, Minasian had stated that after the last four seasons, Rendon would not only be handed over to the third basic job because of his contract. The angels were open to everyday additions in the hot corner throughout the winter and allegedly examined potential trades for Nolan Arenado. Alec Bohm and Eugenio Suarez. The newly signed Yoan Moncada to a year, $ 5 mm appointment. With Rendon out indefinitely, Moncada’s already apparent status, as the team’s primary third Baseman only solidifies further.

There is no exact schedule for Rendon’s return, but at this point it is fair to wonder if he will return to the field in an angel uniform. He has been injured more often than not since the signing of Anaheim and is now facing the prospect of rehabbing from a major operation in the mid -30s. He is signed through the 2026 season and brings him close to the point where teams start to feel comfortable cutting bait on underwater contracts.

Given Moncada’s own long injury history, the angels may do things together on the hot corner this year. Auxiliary infections Kevin Newman Signed a large league agreement early in the high season and could see frequent time there. He can also get some early races on shortstop with Zach Neto Reminding still from shoulder surgery. Said Neto today (Via mlb.com’s Rhett Bollinger) That he recently got some “good news” and is ahead of the plan in his recovery, but it is still not a given that he will be ready for opening day. He hits a tee, but is not yet ready to throw.

Among the remarkable non-roster-invited in Angels Camp that could be included in the Infield mixture — Ice Early- Tim Anderson. JD Davis. Carter Kieboom and Yolmer Sanchez.
