Salem area is preparing for the incoming winter storm

A winter storm is expected to hit much of Oregon on Thursdaythat brings rain, snow and potentially icy conditions.

According to Storm Tracker 2 meteorologist Rhonda Shelby, the storm will probably start in the Salem area around 10 pm. 7 or 8, it is expected to travel south to the north, which means that it will more than likely affect the Salem area first before moving up to Portland.

Marion County Public Works has announced that the crews are using de-icer on the roads in preparation for the storm. Trucks, Sanders and plows are controlled and will be deployed at. 4 Thursday. The Agency is planning to repeat this strategy on Friday if necessary.

David House, a spokesman for the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), said Thursday morning is likely to be the worst road conditions.

“On Thursday morning, we expect it to be the most challenging time to travel, even in the lowlands. It’s potentially very ice -termed in many places throughout Willamette Valley,” House said.

The house explained that snow events in densely populated, low -lying areas can be particularly difficult for herds.

“There are much more travel, much more roads, much more people and the same amount of equipment to walk around Odot, cities and counties. We can only be so many places in so many times,” House said.

He added that there is no difference in answers from county to county. Roads are treated with salt, sand or chemical de-icer based on the needs of the situation. Salt will be used in areas where runoff can enter waterways.

Electricity and other utilities are also at risk during this kind of weather. The wooden branches can freeze and fall, potentially harmful power lines and power bars.

Salem Electric released a statement of: “After the President’s Day Ice Storm in 2021, we restored power to 100% of our Service Power within 48 hours. We expect to respond in a similar way if we experience widespread weather -related damage.”

House said that the most effective tool for keeping people in safety is having an informed public. He recommends that people avoid traveling if possible. For those who are going to travel, he advised to check Tripcheck For the latest road conditions.
