Break out salt and shovels because winter storms are dumping a mess of snow and ice on large shards of American winter warnings or advisers now covering at least 20 states.

Snow and ice storms in the central and eastern United States; heavy rain in the south; Flash-flat looks on the west coast: National Weather Service (NWS) says large storms are threatening to destroy commuter and cancel school days around the country.

As the sun rose on Tuesday morning, satellite images showed a thick glaze of white clouds covering much of the continental United States, with another system threatening out of the Pacific coast.

A “Significant Winter Storm Begins Tuesday,” the Said NWS TuesdayPredict “Heavy snow from northeast Kentucky to West Virginia through the I-95 corridor from Richmond (VA.) to Philadelphia.”

Snow falls by up to 1 inch per hour, the agency said, predicting totals of 4 to 8 inches. The wet snow would make the journey extremely risky, especially in Tuesday’s afternoon opening.

Other winter storms will hit the Midwest and the central plains with heavy snow and ice, said prognosis.

“It’s a very active snow -pattern,” NWS -Teorologist Russell Danielson said, according to the Member Station Colorado Public Radio. “Just snow and cold.”
