Flights still starting, landing by pdx, with few cancellations but still snowfall could change everything

Snow falls over the Portland area on Thursday, but so far it is mostly business as usual in Portland International Airport.

Despite the accumulated snow that settled on the roads that go in and out of PDX, passengers checked into flights, in line by safety and relaxed in coffee shops.

But normality could change rapidly.

A few airlines have canceled flights due to the current or expected weather conditions; PDX’s Website said that from 11:00, 17 flights were canceled and 39 delayed.

“Our winter weather teams on PDX are activated and have predicted sidewalk areas with anti-icing agents, including runways and taxis,” said Port of Portland spokesman Allison Ferre in an email to Oregonian/Oregonlive. “If snow collection or ice cream is realized, maintenance teams are ready with plows and vehicles to use additional de-icers, which makes everything to keep the airport ready.”

Ferre added that some airport convictions are closed due to weather conditions, but most restaurants and shops are open and serve customers.

Oregonian/Oregonlive talked to various travelers at the airport and no one had experienced flight cancellation. However, some were worried what the bad weather could mean for their travel plans later in the day.

Linda Smith, who flew to Phoenix, said she had arrived at PDX at. 9 to make sure she could catch her afternoon flight.

She said she was “mildly” worried that her flight was canceled; She said her daughter, who lives in the Portland area, would pick her up if it happened.

Scott Powell, 78, also traveled to Phoenix, and his flight had been delayed on Thursday morning – but not because of the weather. The airline told him it was because of a mechanical problem with the aircraft.

He appeared carefree of the falling snow outside.

“You have to roll with the blows,” he said. “We just see if it happens.”
