Senator Smith makes Minnesota right in the Senate and Retirement

True it. We saw ours Senator Dianne Feinstein holding power for decades before she died in office, a spread of her formerly indomitable self, at the age of 90 in 2023. Now we have 91-year-old Senate Court President Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, And 82-year-old former Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, occasionally struggles to put together a sentence or tumble on stairs.

Although there is plenty to say for experience and seniority, it is admirable for a leader to go aside to make room for energetic and growing talent.

Smith has no trouble adapting to life back in Minnesota, nor would I expect her to get away from the role of an emeritus senator.

She always dressed for comfort in muted shades, probably a loose oxford, khakis and comfortable shoes regardless of the apartment. Two decades ago, I remember she was sitting on the back of a basement committee room, her young sons next to her who did their homework when she monitored the committee’s action.

Smith didn’t have to be in the front row or in the camera lens. She just did the work.

And now she’s finished Minnesotan’s proud to announce her intentions and give her many successors a long runway to declare and put together their team at the rare award for an open American Senate seat.
