USS Harry S. Truman involved in collision near Egypt, says Navy

The USS Harry S. Truman Aircraft Carrier was involved in a collision Wednesday with a grocery ship near Port said Egypt, in the Mediterranean, announced the Navy.

“Nimitz-Class Airline Company USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) was involved in a collision with the commercial vessel Besiktas-M at 23.46 local time, February 12, while operating near Port Said, said: Egypt, in The Mediterranean, “the Marine’s sixth fleet said public affairs in a statement.

“The collision did not jeopardize Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) as there are no reports of flooding or injuries. The propulsion system is not affected and in a safe and stable state,” it added.

Navy said the incident is now “under investigation.”

The circumstances up to the collision were not immediately clear.

Truman, based in Norfolk, Virginia, inmates in September to the Mediterranean and the Middle East. It had just finished a port call in Souda Bay, Greece.

The ship “provides a wide range of flexible mission capabilities to include maritime security operations, expedition strength projection, forward -looking fleet presence, crisis, sea control, deterrence, terrorism, information operations and security cooperation,” according to Navy.

“The ship’s initiated air wing is capable of projecting tactical air power over the sea and in the country as well as providing sea-based air, surface and underground defense functions,” it also said.

Last December, two US naval pilots were shot down over the Red Sea in what seemed to be “friendly fire,” the US military said at the time.

The pilots were found alive after throwing themselves out of their plane with someone suffering from minor damage.
