VINTRY mixture turns into rain; New system could bring more rain, snow over the weekend

A mixture of snow, gossip and freezing rain that fell shortly on Wednesday night changed to all rain when Long Island endured another winter weather event.

A new system can affect the region’s weekend, prognosis said.

Public and private schools opened according to plan on Thursday; There were no reported delays over Long Island.

LIRR was running on or close to the plan. The region’s airports, Kennedy, Laguardia and MacArthur, reported that they operated normally.

National Weather Service -Meteorologist Jay Angels said that after short snow and gossip overnight has rained in the area, as temperatures rose in the middle to the upper 30s.

“It’s just pretty wet and sad,” he said.

Precipitation is expected to clear in the afternoon with wind out of the west later.

For Southwest and Southeast Suffolk, Weather Service has warned that coastal floods are expected on Thursday morning to the afternoon with up to half a feet of Inundation over the earth’s surface “Expected in vulnerable areas near the waterfront and coast.”

“Short minor floods of the more vulnerable locations near the waterfront and coastline” is expected, according to a statement from the weather service, warning of not driving through flooded roads.

The storm is the second round of back-to-back weather events on Long Island.

Snow arrived on Tuesday night and fell just over 3 inches in parts of Suffolk and almost 2½ inches on parts of Nassaus South Shore, according to Weather Service Totals.

Many school districts and private schools opened with a two-hour delay on Wednesday.

Friday’s forecast requires dry, cold conditions.

Then a new system on Saturday could start as snow and turn into a mixture of rain and snow in the evening. The rainfall continues through Sunday morning, prognosis said.
