game

For the first time in nearly a decade, the NHL will host a Best-on-best competition With the 4 Nations Face-off tournament that starts Wednesday night.

The four nations include the United States, Canada, Finland and Sweden, with each team having the best players from their home country to win the initial tournament.

The 4 Nations Face-off replaces the annual tradition of an NHL All-Star weekend at this time of year and is a warm-up to what will come in 2026, with an All-Star game on Long Island at UBS Arena, home to New York Islanders and the league’s return to winter -ol in Milan, Italy this time next winter.

How to see the format, guards and more for the highly expected opening debut of 4 Nations Face-off Tournament:

What to know about 4 nations face-off format

Each country plays a game against the other three countries in the round Robin scene. Team earns three points for a regulatory gain, two points for an overtime/shootout victory and one point for if they lose in overtime/shootout. The two teams with the best records face each other in the championship.

Games are played under NHL rules, where the lonely exception is that overtime will now contain 10 minutes of 3-to-3 sudden death throughout the round Robin part as opposed to the NHL’s five minutes. If it is still tied after 10 minutes, the game then goes to a shootout. During the championship game, overtime is just as it is in the NHL Playoff Overtime: 5-to-5 hockey for 20 minutes of periods of the next team scoring a goal wins the game.
