The skill challenge was an elimination process for me: Team Cavs is too cool, Team Rooks is too raw, and Team Warriors will be too distracted as a weekend host. That leaves tremendously skilled Victor Wembanyama and Feisty Sidekick Chris Paul. I’m taking Lillard to add a third penny in the 3-point competition because that’s what he’s doing and this is a “home game” for Oakland-natives. Nothing against Mac McClung – heck, I choose him to win the Dunk competition – but it would be nice if one of the other young guys who are in the NBA would win. It would be nice if some NBA stars would also compete in this, but that ship has sailed. McClung’s hops and underdog aura are likely to prevail again.

Since Kia Skills Challenge introduced a team format in 2022, the host city team has been undefeated. I have the strip that was snapped by an all-star-rookie (Victor Wembanyama) and a veteran (Chris Paul) with team spores. Last year I chose Damian Lillard to be the first repeated 3-point champion of 16 years and he delivered. Now I choose Oakland, who is a resident of being the first three-dryer of 33 years, and joining Craig Hodges and Larry Bird. There has never been a dunk competition three-dry … That is, until Saturday night. I go with McClung to bring the house down again and edge Matas Buzelis.

The heart says the team is tracking with Chris Paul and Victor Wembanyama, while the brain goes with Team Cavs because everything has worked well for Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley so far. In the Starry 3-Point competition, the Lillard-born and raised in the Bay area and a two-time master-here. In Vince Carter’s words, it’s Ovah. Kansas City Chiefs couldn’t three peat, but McClung will show them how it’s done. He brings more funk to the dunk and – for other – he has earned more money in this competition than from his NBA contract?

The home team has won the skill challenge in each of the last three years. Let’s make it four. Lillard just knows how to win the 3-point competition and to do it at home (or close to home) should motivate a three-peat. Like Lillard, Mac McClung should be the favorite of a third straight dunk competition, but maybe we get some voter fatigue that opens the door for Jackson, which should have the right combination of height and flare to deter G Leaguer.
