The ridge system will slide through the Northeast on Thursday, moving the heavy snow to the eastern shores of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

“That wind is straight down from Canada and is pulling more down in the path of the cold air — part of the reason so many people in the eastern part of the country are dealing with below-average temperatures,” FOX Weather Meteorologist Ian Oliver said. “It also keeps the lake-effect snow machine running. So December kicks off with a bang.”

Lighter but accumulating snow is expected across the lower elevations of the upstate New York and western and northern Pennsylvania.

While high winds weren’t much of a factor in the previous one blizzard with lake effectthis time, violent winds will blow across the northeast like the strong one low pressure center presses across the region.

It is likely that widespread wind gusts of 40-50 mph will create near blizzard conditions along the lake-effect snow bands.

In total, more than 77 million people are from the Dakotas to Massachusettsincluding those in cities such as Minneapolis, Chicago, Washington and New York Cityare included in Wind Advisories.

Winds can gust up to 50 mph in the Minneapolis area, while tropical storm-strength wind gusts could also blast Cape Cod and Nantucket in Massachusetts.

Depending on the timing of the storm on Thursday, some areas along the I-95 corridor could see at least some wet snow or a rain/snow mix.

Neither New York, Philadelphia neither Boston have yet to see any measurable snow reported in the weather books this season. However, Central Park reported it first “track” of snow on Tuesday.
