Tom Holland is now one of the biggest stars in the world, but it’s easy to forget that he wasn’t always that way Spider-Man.

After impressing as Billy Elliot on stage, Holland made his way into films, starting with more dramatic fare. Technically his debut film was an English dub role for Arrietty as Shō, but the first time we actually saw him in a film was The Impossible.

The disaster film is based on a family’s experience during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor star as Maria and Henry Bennett, with Holland playing Lucas, one of their three sons.

If you haven’t seen it yet, The Impossible airs tonight (December 8) at 00.30 on BBC Oneor in the early hours of Monday morning if you prefer.

We know it’s too late for a screening, but luckily The Impossible will be available to watch on BBC iPlayer shortly after it airs next month.

If you can’t wait, The Impossible is also available to watch right now on Netflix in the UK and Ireland.

Back in 2013, Holland was on the awards circuit for The Impossible when he was asked what his ideal future roles would be.

“There are so many roles every year that it’s impossible to say exactly what you want to do, but something that has a bit of action or a bit of comedy; maybe something less serious than The Impossible. Maybe something a bit funny .” he said.

“What kind of superhero would I want to play? Maybe Spider-Man in 10 years. Maybe. The reboot of the reboot.”

What a prediction it turned out to be.

The Impossible was directed by JA Bayona, who earlier this year was back in the disaster genre with The society of the snowwhich was one of Netflix’s most watched non-English language movies.

It was also nominated for Best international feature film at this year’s Oscarsbut the Society of the Snow got stiff competition from The zone of interestwho ended up taking the trophy. The two films also went together at the BAFTAs and The zone of interest won.

The Impossible airs tonight (December 8) at 00.30 on BBC One.
