Chiefs defeat Chargers 19-17, win AFC West

The Kansas City Chiefs won their ninth straight AFC West title on Sunday, beating the Los Angeles Chargers 19-16 to win the division.

Kicker Matthew Wright, playing in his second game of the season for the Chiefs, knocked in a field goal from the left upright as time expired to give Kansas City the victory. Three plays before the decisive kick, Patrick Mahomes found Travis Kelce on a third-and-7 for a first down, allowing the Chiefs to run down the clock on the final play.

Mahomes completed 24 of 47 passes for 210 yards and a touchdown.

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, playing without his leading receiver and his leading rusher, threw for 213 yards and a score. Herbert led Los Angeles to 17 second-half points, but couldn’t get the offense into the end zone on the team’s final drive, setting the stage for Kansas City’s game-winning field goal.

The Chiefs improved to 12-1. They will next play the Cleveland Browns in Week 15.

The Chargers fell to 8-5. Los Angeles has just one win against a team with a winning record this season. Their next game is at home against the 7-6 Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
