Parody company launches gag micronuclear reactor

There has been a new update in the “revival” of the fallen Enron company as they introduced a new product that they say can “power your entire home for up to 10 years straight.”

On Monday, the company unveiled its new “micro-nuclear reactor,” dubbed the “Enron Egg.”

The rollout included a five-minute-and-26-second announcement video that looks like a vintage Steve Jobs Apple product introduction.

In the video, “Enron CEO” Connor Gaydos makes several outlandish claims, including that Enron has teamed up with FEMA to deliver Enron Eggs to first responders around the world.

It probably goes without saying, but this rollout is not serious.

The former Houston-based company, which was the subject of one of the largest bankruptcy filings in American history more than 20 years ago, resurfaced with a sudden “rebranding” in December. This came as a shock to many, but it soon became clear that the new version of the company was made to exist as a satirical movement rather than a sincere business.

My take on the ‘Enron egg’

Parody companies are far from a new phenomenon. After all, satirical news websites like The onion has found success in comment-through-spoof, and a “let’s say something ridiculous and see if anyone bites” mentality.

Still, this whole product rollout seems like a lot of effort for a pretty cheap bit. While it’s fun to highlight the eccentric leaders in technology with their major rollouts, it’s something that’s been done before. Ironically, it looks like the former utility company may be putting too much gas in this bit.

But then again, maybe I’m just not in on the joke!
